Head of IEA expects EU's demand for Russian gas to pick up

On 7 November, Russia formally started construction of its Europe-bound South Stream pipeline to Europe.

The project is due to start operating in 2015 and supplement the Nord Stream route which is already pumping Russian gas direct to Germany.

But while sales of Russian gas in Europe seems to be falling, Maria van der Hoeven - Executive Director at International Energy Agency - says demand for it could pick up again after falling for a number of years due to the global economic crisis and the availability of cheap coal.
