Greece 'most corrupt' EU country, new survey reveals

Firebomb at anti-austerity riot in Greece Economic and social turmoil in Greece has contributed to an increased perception of corruption

Greece is perceived to have the most corrupt public sector of all 27 EU countries, a new global survey reveals.

Worldwide, Denmark, Finland and New Zealand were seen as the least corrupt nations, while Afghanistan, North Korea and Somalia were perceived to be the most corrupt.

Transparency International's 2012 Corruption Perceptions Index gathered views on 176 countries worldwide.

Two-thirds scored below 50, with zero highly corrupt and 100 very clean.

The UK ranked 17th in the world, with a score of 74.

Greece's global ranking fell from 80th in 2011 to 94th in 2012, reflecting the country's continuing economic turmoil and widespread tax evasion.

Italy was ranked 72nd, below EU-newcomer Romania at 66 in the index.

"Governments need to integrate anti-corruption actions into all public decision-making", said Huguette Labelle, chair of Transparency International (TI), a body set up in 1993 to expose and tackle countrywide corruption.

"Priorities include better rules on lobbying and political financing, making public spending and contracting more transparent and making public bodies more accountable to people."

TI believes there are strong correlations between poverty, conflict and perceived levels of corruption.

How do they know. What a load of rubbish, to think here in the UK it's all sweetness and light. The Top 10% are morally corrupt, then there is massive tax evasion/avoidance. Massive payments for failure, payments for peerages, expences scandles etc etc. How many times do we hear about planning applications being granted, when there is hundreds of objections, we are not clean here in the UK.

How about 'Cloak & Dagger Global Manipulators of Fact' survey

You will stand a sight better chance of being perceived as credible in your assertions !

When will Governments understand that the world is better informed and less easily deceived these days?

"Greece's global ranking fell ... widespread tax evasion".

Our private sector is dragging us in the same direction. We need a dramatic reinforcement to our tax system to ensure we all pay fairly, unfortunately I don't see our government has the will to do it. Too many vested interests !!

Bet there were a few sweaty palms in the UK pending this result being announced!

    Not at all

A nice fat brown envelope meant we were number 17 before they even started this survey !

Greece joined the EEC on fraudulent, economic data which was accepted by the bureaucrats in Brussels who themselves are corrupt.Rest is history.Hundreds of Billions of Euros are being poured into the country's black hole. The average Greek has no idea where the money is disappearing.I bet back to a joint bank account in Cayman or similar location. This is the real Greek Tragedy.

Having lived and worked in Greece I am not surprised. Till drawers left open so that money taken in is not recorded and therefore no tax paid, workers not registered for EKA (tax), everything done as a backhander and if you happen to be from the Uk expect to be charged 400% more for anything! The list goes on and that is why I am back in the UK.

We should stop giving foreign aid to any country which is not in the top quarter of the table.

I think they survey meant the "Greek Government" is the most corrupt.

I think ours isn't too far off if you count counterfeiting & theft as forms of corruption & aggression eh.

Good to see we're ranked a lofty 17'th with Japan, whose Government is very moral:

    Are we nuts!?

Corruption runs the world. All this survey shows is that some countries are better at hiding it than others. When it's blatant, it's called "corruption", when it's a lot less obvious, it's called "big business".

    55. Jim
And that is why the Greek people are so angry about the austerity measures. Financial turmoil and corrupt government is a very dangerous mixture.

Even more dangerous is touting opinion as fact and slapping a provocative attention grabbing headline on it...

Does anyone think if I slipped the Greek Tourist Board a fiver, they'd supply me with 2 weeks on Kos, last week in July, first week in August?

Just a reminder to all those who only have to see the letters "EU" and they go into idiot mode... the poll was about perceived corruption in the public services. The best people to judge are those who have regular contact with them. That should exclude about 95% of the comments, from those who've never had contacts with public services outside their own country.

Time will tell if the newest entrants / applicants from the former Easten Bloc (such as Croatia, Serbia, Albania, Macedonia, Kosavo to name but a few) will manage to knock Greece off its top spot ?

I'm really getting tired of this type of BBC Journalism and the headline for this story regarding Greece SO very wrong and misleading.

THey are not the most corrupt but PERCEIVED to be....and even then that statement is debatable considering the lies, the broken promises and the fraud we have had to put up with in the UK with our own MP's and politicians which still continues

Surely the most corrupt member of the EU is the EU itself? Unelected, unaccountable and taking the taxpayer for a ride on the gravy train.
