Osborne on Mark Carney for Bank of England governor

The chancellor has justified the appointment of Mark Carney, the current governor of the Bank of Canada, as the new governor of the Bank of England.

He was a surprise choice for the head of the UK's central bank and had previously ruled himself out.

Speaking to the BBC's Business Editor Robert Peston, George Osborne said that Carney was the "outstanding choice" who would "bring a fresh perspective" to the job.

He also defended choosing someone from outside the UK, adding that attracting such a candidate "says a lot of very good things about Britain".
