A history of energy tariff plans
It is estimated there could be anywhere between a few hundred and tens of thousands of energy tariffs available, as companies compete hard to attract customers.
Mail on Sunday personal finance reporter Richard Dyson has tried to count the different rates and thinks there could be as many as 40,000, making it almost impossible to find the best deal.
