A history of energy tariff plans


It is estimated there could be anywhere between a few hundred and tens of thousands of energy tariffs available, as companies compete hard to attract customers.

Mail on Sunday personal finance reporter Richard Dyson has tried to count the different rates and thinks there could be as many as 40,000, making it almost impossible to find the best deal.

To discover how we got to this point he has been taking a look back at the history of domestic energy and finding out whether there are lessons we can learn from the past.
