China clamps down on drugs sector after safety scandal
China is clamping down on its pharmaceutical industry following a product safety scandal.
The Xinhua news agency says 22 people have been arrested in connection with tainted drugs containing high levels of chromium, a toxic material found in scrap leather.
China's drug regulator has also halted the sale of 13 drugs containing the substance, which can cause cancer.
Jason Mann, head of China healthcare at Barclays Capital in Beijing, told the BBC's Asia Business Report that the government is now being more active in ensuring public safety.
