US GDP grows 2.8% in last quarter of 2011

US GDP grew by 2.8% in the final quarter of 2011, its fastest rate for 18 months, figures released on Friday show.

The figures were buoyed by a drop in unemployment and strong consumer spending over the holiday period, but there is uncertainty about whether the trend will continue.
