Rusal: Back from the brink?


Aluminium is extreme: it is one of the most sought after commodities of the last decade - demand and prices fell sharply during the global financial crisis. That lead to serious turmoil in a highly competitive industry.

The current leader of the industry, Russia's Rusal, is a good example of this.

Its fortunes have been as volatile as the price for aluminium: a narrow escape from collapse during the financial crisis, a widely criticised IPO in Hong Kong, but also an ambitious programme for modernization and a determined push into Asian market.

Is Rusal back from the brink? Emma Simpson reports from Krasnoyarsk, where Rusal operates the world's second largest aluminium smelter.
