Trinidad and Tobago: 'Bogus' website plugs political rival
- 22 July 2013
A website bearing the name of a political party in Trinidad displays an election poster for a rival, it's emerged.
Members of the centre-left Congress of the People are fuming at the "bogus website", reports suggest. Congressofthepeople.com isn't the website of the COP, which sits at the less-catchy coptnt.com, the Trinidad Express points out. Instead, the former offers a link to the recently-formed Independent Liberal Party of ex-minister and former football heavyweight Jack Warner, before diverting to a promotional site for cricket. The congress complains: "This is the lowest form of political deception."
Warner resigned as vice-president of football's governing body Fifa in 2011, causing an internal inquiry into bribery allegations to be discontinued with "presumption of innocence maintained". However, regional governing body Concacaf's fraud inquiry continues and he stepped down as Trinidad and Tobago's minister of security in April. It's not harmed his electoral appeal, it seems, given Sunday Express reports that Warner - who denies wrongdoing - is riding high in opinion polls ahead of a 29 July by-election.
