Paper Monitor: When is a secret a secret?

  • 22 August 2013

When is a secret a secret?

When the world doesn't know something, when you don't know something or when a newspaper doesn't know something?

It's the latter if the front page of today's Daily Star is anything to go by. Its headline tells of "CORRIE STAR'S SHOCK SECRET LOVE CHILDREN".

The Corrie star is Charlie Condou, who plays midwife Marcus Dent. The gay actor has "secretly fathered two children with a straight girl pal", says the paper.

Georgia, four, and two-year-old son Hal are being raised by their mother, actress Catherine Kanter, Condou and his partner Cameron Laux.

This "secret" probably only came as a "shock" to the Daily Star's newsroom. It certainly wasn't a shock to the Guardian -Condou has been writing a weekly column for the paper about being a father for nearly two years.

In "The three of us: Two dads, one mum - one family", he chronicles family life from as far back as the 20-week scan when Kanter was pregnant with Hal.

He's also written about his family in several national newspapers and magazines, as well as appearing on several TV shows.

But it would seem that if something isn't common knowledge in Daily Starland, then it is a secret and finding out about it is a shock.

The Sun gets the prize for the most inexplicable, and frankly rather disturbing, mock ups of the year so far.

Hope Powell has been sacked as the manager of England Women's football team. It's thought her replacement will be a woman but few names have been put forward, possibly paving the way for a man.

The Sun has taken it upon itself to mock up what 20 Premier League managers and England boss Roy Hodgson would look like as women.

Crystal Palace boss Ian Holloway is transformed into Lillian Holloway and dressed in a red evening dress with plunging neckline. Hull City manager Steve Bruce becomes Steph Bruce and looks the spitting image of Heather Trott from Eastenders. It is the stuff of nightmares.

Even more disturbingly, Paper Monitor has to admit Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger looks rather attractive as Alison Wenger. Think Helen Mirren.

Take note Daily Star. That really is revealing a "SHOCKING SECRET".
