The former editor of the New York Times has made her first public comments since being sacked from the paper on Wednesday.

Giving the graduation speech at Wake Forest University in North Carolina, Jill Abramson quoted her late father, urging graduates to "show what [they] are made of".

She also confirmed her intention to remain "very much a part of" the journalism profession. The reason for her sudden departure from the paper has not been revealed.
