Fiscal cliff deadline nears as Congress reconvenes

The US Congress will reconvene in a rare Sunday session in a last ditch effort to avoid the so-called fiscal cliff.

Unless both the Senate and the House of Representatives agree a new budget package by the end of Monday night, taxes will automatically go up for all Americans, and there will be deep cuts to government spending programmes in 2013.
