US astronaut Neil Armstrong speaking in 2011 to US Congress

US astronaut Neil Armstrong, who has died aged 82, accepted the highest civilian honour on 16 November in 2011 - a Congressional Gold Medal at the US Capitol Rotunda in Washington DC.

In his acceptance speech before the US Congress, he said ''ideological differences fade in the presence of the overpowering force of pride in what we do''.

He was the first man to set foot on the Moon on 20 July 1969, famously describing the event as "one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind".
