US Congress votes on debt compromise

America's politicians are poised to start voting on a deal to stop the country potentially defaulting on its debts.

The last-minute plan, thrashed out between President Obama and party leaders, would raise the US debt ceiling by $2.4 trillion but also includes the same amount in spending cuts.

The President described the last few weeks as "messy" but urged everyone to back the deal.

Paul Adams reports.
