Relatives screamed in despair after an Egyptian court sentenced to death 528 supporters of ousted Islamist President Mohammed Morsi.
They were convicted of charges including murdering a policeman and attacks on people and property.
The BBC's Orla Guerin said there was "shock" at the verdict, and said the group is expected to appeal.
