Palestinian statehood across the West Bank and Gaza

Palestinians across the West Bank have been holding rallies in support of President Abbas' attempt to receive UN recognition for a Palestinian state.

While UN recognition would have largely symbolic value, the Palestinians argue that it would strengthen their hands in peace talks with Israel, especially on the final issues that divide them.

However, the move has met with resistance from Israel and the US.

The BBC's Jon Donnison in Nablus said that the demonstrations had been broadly peaceful.
