Ukraine crisis: 'Entire democratic world is being challenged'

Ukraine has said that Russia's support for the militants in the east of their country is a challenge to the "entire democratic world".

Ukrainian ambassador Oleksandr Pavlichenko asked the UN for help to "resist Russian aggression".

Russia's ambassador to the UN Vitaly Churkin rejected the peace plan Ukraine had suggested saying it was in fact "a step in further escalation".

He criticised Ukraine for failing to start and "inclusive national dialogue".
