Tear gas used at Turkey May Day protests

May Day protests have taken place in the Turkish city of Istanbul.

Police used water cannon and tear gas as hundreds of people tried to defy a ban on demonstrations in Taksim Square.

The authorities have deployed thousands of police and shut down the public transport system.
