EU seeks answers over US internet surveillance

The European Health Commissioner has demand assurances that the rights of European citizens are not being infringed by a huge internet surveillance operation run by the United States.

In a debate at the European Parliament, Tonio Borg, said the EU would seek a clear commitment on the issue at a meeting with US officials on Friday.

One MEP said reports of the spying programme cast doubt on the special relationship between Europe and the United States.

President Obama says the operation is needed to protect the US from terrorism.
