Australia's Julia Gillard aiming for coalition rule

Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard has said she is speaking to independent candidates in the hope of forming a government, after an inconclusive election.

She told a news conference she intended to "negotiate in good faith" and "with the nation's interest as my compass".

Ms Gillard said she still believed "a majority of Australians... prefer a Labor Government".
