Afghanistan: Was it worth it?

Can Afghanistan be pacified; what is going to happen there now that Nato troops are poised to withdraw; and will the Taliban take over large swathes of the country will Al Qaeda people move back?

On Tuesday there was a gun and rocket bomb attack right in the heart of Kabul, casting further doubt over the chances of a smooth transition of control.

The Today programme's Sarah Montague, who has visited Afghanistan several times for the programme, reports from Helmand, where British troops have been fighting for the past six years.

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4's Today programme on Wednesday 26 June 2013.
