North Korea expert: Pacts were barely implemented

North Korea has announced it is ending its non-aggression pact with South Korea in direct retaliation for a new round of United Nations sanctions, imposed following Pyongyang's third nuclear test.

In a statement, just hours after the UN measures were approved, North Korea said it was also closing the main border crossing between the countries and the North-South hotline would be cut off.

South Korea's new President Park Geun-hye says the security situation is 'very grave'.

Aidan Foster-Carter, a long-time Korea analyst, told the BBC's Karin Giannone that we may be witnessing true leadership character of Kim Jong-un.
