Fijians shelter as Cyclone Evan batters island

Thousands of Fijians sheltered in evacuation centres as Cyclone Evan lashed the Pacific island nation.

Early reports suggested that power had been lost in some areas, with reports of flooding and structural damage.

Winds were estimated to bet between 170-185 km/h (105-115mph) with storm-force winds extending 90km from the centre, according to the Fiji Meteorological Service.

Phil Mercer reports.
