Blind woman's anger over benefits claim form

A woman who is registered blind says she had to give "very personal" answers to an official while making a benefits claim for her disabled teenage daughter because an online form was unavailable.

Julie Thomas, from Bridgend, was going through the application process for the Personal Independence Payment for her 16-year-old daughter Corina.

An official called at her home to fill out a paper version of the claim form.

The spending watchdog the UK National Audit Office has said disabled people are facing "distress and financial difficulties" as changes are made to their benefits.

A spokesperson for the Department of Work and Pensions said: "The old system was broken.

"Personal Independence Payment is a principled reform which will ensure support is focused on those with the greatest need.

"It includes a new face-to-face assessment and regular reviews, something missing under the old system."

Ms Thomas spoke to Mai Davies at BBC Radio Wales.
