Horsemeat: Cardiff food expert David Lloyd on controls
Supermarkets are due to announce the tests on beef products later on Friday.
The aim of the industry-wide tests is to determine whether the presence of horsemeat in beef is a rogue occurrence or a wider problem.
David Lloyd, the director of the Food Industry Centre at Cardiff Metropolitan University, told Peter Johnson on Good Morning Wales that the supermarkets had been the main driver of food safety in recent years and the problem could lay in the early phase of the food chain.
