Scottish independence: Labour retain Cowdenbeath seat

Labour has retained the Scottish Parliamentary seat of Cowdenbeath, in Fife, after Alex Rowley won with a majority of more than 5,000 votes.

The party increased its majority in the by-election caused by the death of the MSP Helen Eadie.

Mr Rowley, leader of Fife Council, beat the SNP's Natalie McGarry, with an 11% swing.

Conservative Dave Dempsey was third with nearly 2,000 votes. The UK Independence Party showed signs of improvement in Scotland and pushed the Liberal Democrats into fifth, with more than 600 votes.
