Falklands referendum: UK Foreign Office minister on result
The Argentine government should stop "bullying and intimidating" the Falkland Islands after residents voted to remain a UK overseas territory, said Foreign Office Minister Hugo Swire.
He said the islanders had "spoken as one virtually" with 1,513 voting in favour, and three against, in a referendum result announced overnight on Monday.
Mr Swire said the vote demonstrated to the world the kind of future the islanders wanted, adding that Argentina must look in a "mature way" at how to collaborate after the poll.
Argentine forces invaded the islands in 1982 and the UK has pledged to defend the islands in the south Atlantic Ocean.
