GCSEs: Michael Gove statement in full

Education Secretary Michael Gove has confirmed he is not pressing ahead with plans to replace GCSEs with a new English Baccalaureate in certain subjects, admitting the proposal was "a bridge too far".

He said GCSEs would be toughened up and a new points system to measure students' success would be introduced, taking account of results in eight subjects including English and maths, three subjects from sciences, languages, history and geography and three further subjects.
