Duncan Smith: Welfare-to-work scheme needs more time

The government has defended its welfare-to-work scheme for the long-term unemployed, even though official figures show it missed its main target.

A total of 3.5% of participants have been found jobs lasting at least six months - the target was 5.5%.

But the work and pensions secretary, Iain Duncan Smith, said the project needed more time to deliver results.
