Tory peer claims Lords would be 'strengthened' by elections
The House of Lords would be strengthened by being directly elected, according to Lord Strathclyde.
The Tory leader of the Lords spoke of "a different house, a more assertive house" but claimed a referendum, suggested by a Parliamentry committee, would be "expensive and complicated".
He also argued the current House of Commons had given a lot of powers away and was not "assertive enough".
