La Sagesse demolition team discover gold and marble altar

A gold and marble altar has been discovered by demolition workers knocking down a historic school on Tyneside.

It was found in the chapel of La Sagesse convent school in Jesmond, Newcastle, which closed five years ago.

The altar narrowly escaped the bulldozers having been hidden away for decades.

The former school is being replaced by a development of luxury homes.
