Closure plan for Newcastle's Scotswood surgery sparks outrage
The planned closure of a Newcastle GP surgery has been condemned by patients and MPs.
Scotswood Surgery is to shut its doors at the end of the month, but, it is claimed, the move will put around 1,000 vulnerable people at risk.
NHS England said the contract to run the service was coming to an end and the company managing the surgery, Primary Care North East, decided not to renew it.
However, Primary Care North East said it only pulled out because the NHS would not pay what was needed to run it.
NHS England is now in talks with another provider about a temporary service for Scotswood in the coming months.
A public meeting is due be held at Newcastle Civic Centre on Thursday.
