Baby defies odds of rare disease at Liverpool hospital

A couple who were told they were unlikely to have a healthy baby have defied the odds with the help of pioneering treatment at a Liverpool hospital.

John and Kerry Bates both carry a gene linked to a severe form of muscular dystrophy.

They lost their 20-month-old son to the rare muscle-wasting disorder in 2005, and were told their best chance of having a family was through adoption.

Now they are the proud parents of a healthy baby girl, thanks to staff at Liverpool Women's Hospital.
