Newham mayor 'will not shut' council-run newspaper

The mayor of one of five London boroughs criticised for publishing free newspapers says he has no intention of getting rid of the publication.

Newham mayor Sir Robin Wales said it was a cost effective way of publishing information but Communities and Local Government secretary Eric Pickles has accused the authorities of "peddling propaganda".

He has given the five Labour-run boroughs a fortnight to defend their actions and to explain why legal proceedings should not be taken against their "Town Hall Pravdas".
