Everest climb team member George Lowe dies, aged 89

Tributes have been paid to George Lowe, who was a member of the team which first conquered Mount Everest in 1953.

George died in Ripley, Derbyshire on Wednesday after a long-term illness.

Leading the tributes, Derbyshire climber Nigel Vardy, said: "He was a fantastic climber, great explorer and tremendous teacher.

"It is the end of the dynasty really. The end of those people from 1953 who put up one of the great climbs of history."
