Former Scarborough Mayor Jaconelli sex abuse claims

Inside Out investigates allegations made by Real Whitby, the online blog site, that the former Scarborough mayor, Peter Jaconelli, was a child abuser.

Real Whitby claims that he was well known to the police as a paedophile but was protected because of his status as a wealthy businessman and respected political figure.

Inside Out's Chris Jackson tests the allegations and speaks to some of the alleged victims who claimed they were abused by Peter Jaconelli.

One of the alleged victims said he was 15 years old when Jaconelli propositioned him in 1968.

Chris Jackson also speaks to blogger Nigel Ward from Real Whitby who believes the claims should be investigated further.

Peter Jaconelli died in 1999 but his family say they are not aware of any credible evidence that he committed any sexual crimes.

North Yorkshire Police and the Independent Police Complaints Commission say they have reviewed Real Whitby's claims but have decided that no further action is required.

However, North Yorkshire Police says it will consider any allegations raised in the programme or elsewhere.

Inside Out is broadcast on Monday, 10 February at 19:30 GMT on BBC One North East & Cumbria and Yorkshire & Lincolnshire as well as nationwide for seven days thereafter on the iPlayer.
