Newcastle to Carlisle rail line celebrates 175 years
It is 175 years since the world's first coast-to-coast railway opened, between the north-east of England and Cumbria.
The Tyne Valley line between east and west opened in 1838, improving links for industry and farmers who needed to transport livestock.
The anniversary was marked with celebrations in Newcastle, Carlisle and along the line itself.
