Straw: My 'instinct' is for UK to support US airstrikes

David Cameron is to chair a meeting of the government's emergency committee Cobra, to discuss a response to the threat by Islamic State of a beheading of a British hostage.

The Labour MP Jack Straw was foreign secretary in 2004 when the British hostage Ken Bigley was murdered by his captors.

"The British government like the American government...you need some kind of communication with the hostage takers and of course have to handle the desperate and difficult emotions of the families concerned."

And Mr Straw added that it was his "instinct" that the UK should offer support to US air strikes in Iraq if requested.
