Housing benefits scheme 'on track'

Employment minister Esther McVey responds to claims that the government's housing benefits scheme is not having the desired results.

Government changes to housing benefits are "on track", employment minister Esther McVey has said.

Her comments come as new BBC research suggests only 6% of social housing tenants in Britain affected by changes designed to cut under-occupancy have moved home.

Ministers had hoped cutting benefits for tenants deemed to have a spare room would free up larger homes.

But Ms McVey said that the government figure was actually "about 8%", which had been "expected".

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4's Today programme on Friday 28 March.
