Winds and rain cause chaos across UK and Ireland

Thousands of homes are without power as gale-force winds and rain batter the UK and Ireland.

Severe damage has been caused to buildings, roads and public transport networks in Northern Ireland and the Irish Republic.

Around 2,500 homes in Cumbria and Lancashire have had their electricity supplies cut off, and there are multiple flood warnings in place in Scotland, Wales and south-west England.
