U-10s football coach fired after wanting to win

The football coach of an under-10s team has been sacked after telling parents he was "only interested in winning".

Justin Byrne, 42, who managed the team at Chalfont St Peter's Football Club in Buckinghamshire, said teaching children that the world was non-competitive would not "do them any favours."

The father of three told BBC Radio 5 live's Breakfast: "People should be trained to win and I believe that there is a severe lack of competitive nature in British culture at the moment."

However the club's U-14's coach Steve Fowler defended the decision, stating that the boys were not being given an equal opportunity to play football and were getting upset as a result.
