Bandstands in 'state of serious disrepair'

A concert to save a historic bandstand that helped launch David Bowie's career will take place on Sunday.

The bandstand in Beckenham was the location of a festival organised by Bowie on the same weekend as the Woodstock festival in 1969.

Kathy Clark, a conservation advisor at the Victorian Society, told the Today programme: "There are quite a lot of bandstands that are still in a state of serious disrepair.

"It would be a real shame if we let these beautiful park features [disappear]."

First broadcast on the Today programme on Tuesday 10 September.
