Britain to play 'leading role' in Syria aid
After talks at the G20 summit, the most powerful countries in the world were still unable to speak with one voice on Syria. Britain will not be part of any military action, but will still provide humanitarian aid.
International development secretary Justine Greening told the Today programme that this country will play a "leading role" in the humanitarian response to the Syria crisis, adding that if a military action cannot be agreed upon then we must be able to "respond effectively from a humanitarian perspective".
Greening admitted that the money saved on military action will not necessarily be transferred directly to humanitarian aid and said that Britain "cannot do this on its own". She told the Today programme that the crisis is so great that a much broader based international community response is needed.
