Rise in debt due to tax credit overpayment

There has been a big increase in the number of households in England and Wales falling into debt because they are paying back tax credits given to them by mistake.

The Citizens' Advice Bureau says overpayment problems have affected nearly 30,000 households, a rise of 14%.

But HM Revenue and Customs says many errors are because people have not told them about a change in their circumstances.
