Brazil's 'new middle class' gained fame worldwide as a symbol of upward mobility - with as many as 40 million people said to have been lifted out of poverty during the past decade.
Nevertheless, middle class living standards in Brazil are lower than in many developed countries and the recent wave of demonstrations in Brazil reflects a deep dissatisfaction with public services in the country.
