How do our rail fares compare with the rest of Europe?

Commuters face bigger than expected hikes in train fares in the new year, after a surprise increase in inflation figures.

Rail fares in England will go up by an average of 6.2%, which is 3 percent over RPI.

In Scotland - where train companies can increase prices by one percent over inflation - fares are set to rise by an average of 4.2%.
