Everest anniversary: Journalist's battle for Everest scoop

Major celebrations on Wednesday will mark the 60th anniversary of the first ascent of Everest.

Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay were part of a British team that scaled the peak in 1953. It had been the ultimate climbing goal for decades.

The Times newspaper sponsored the expedition and went to great lengths to prevent other journalists finding out the climb had been successful.
