Manx nurse shortage prompts temporary care home closure

Help

A nurse shortage in the Isle of Man has prompted the temporary closure of a care home for elderly, mentally ill patients in the south of the island.

The Gansey unit at Southlands Resource centre, in Port Erin, will close for at least one month on 28 August.

The decision will affect eight residents who will be moved to another specialist unit in Farmhill, Douglas.

Lorna Mackellar, whose father is at the unit two nights a week, said: "It is going to be a serious problem for everyone living in the south, it means I lose respite completely."
