Arrest after teenagers' deaths in Ceredigion lake crash

Two teenagers have died after a car they were in crashed into a lake near Aberystwyth, Ceredigion. Five people were travelling in the car.

A 21-year-old man has been arrested after a car crashed into a lake in the early hours, killing two teenagers.

An inquest has been opened on Anwen Chloe Lane Busby, 16, of Penparcau, Aberystwyth, Ceredigion. Jai Burkes, 19, also died.

The car, driven by Mr Burkes' best friend Ashley Williams, plunged down a 20ft (6m) embankment off the A44 at Ponterwyd, Ceredigion, at 0030 BST.

Mr Williams and two 16-year-old girls survived.

The vehicle became submerged in 4ft (1.2m) of water, said police.

Friends of the dead teenagers visited the scene to leave a floral tribute, as well as setting up online tributes.

Antony Charnock, 20, said: "I spoke with them all on the phone last night a couple of hours before the crash.

"They had picked up the girls and gone for a drive in the country.

"This is devastating. We were all good friends. I knew all five. It seems unreal."

The A44 was closed while investigations were carried out, and has now reopened.

Police say no other vehicles were involved.

Two fire crews from Aberystwyth attended the incident at Llywernog lake with a fire service boat.

Four people were released by Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service crews using cutting equipment. The fifth person had got free of the wreckage before the fire service arrived.

Insp Derrick Edwards said: "A single vehicle had left the carriageway and travelled down a 20ft embankment, before becoming submerged in approximately 4ft of water.

"The vehicle contained five occupants. Tragically two of the passengers died at the scene."

BBC Wales reporter Craig Duggan said from the scene the incident happened near a bend in the road.

A crane has recovered the vehicle from the lake and investigations are being carried out.

'Devastating'

Later, the Ceredigion coroner Peter Brunton, opened and adjourned an inquest into Ms Busby's death.
