BBC News is assessing what retirement from work means for people around the world and the different ways people fund this time in their lives.
The UK is about to experience wide-ranging changes to the pensions provisions available to support its older generations financially once they stop working.
In the US, meanwhile, many are fearing for their financial futures beyond retirement, with job cuts and slumping property prices hitting many people's long-term plans hard.
French strikers have also been protesting against proposed plans to raise the retirement age from 60 to 62 among their workforce.
