UK marine killed in Afghanistan

A Royal Marine has died in southern Afghanistan, the Ministry of Defence has said.

The marine's next of kin have been informed of the death, which happened on Thursday.

It takes the total number of UK service personnel killed in Afghanistan since 2001 to 310.

The previous soldier to be killed died on Sunday in a firefight with insurgents in the Nahr-e Saraj district of Helmand province.

Four other Royal Marines were killed in Afghanistan over a four-day period last month.
